The format Apple devices prefer
M4A holds AAC audio, the codec that iOS, macOS and iTunes were built around. At the same file size it holds up better than MP3, particularly on cymbals, strings and anything with sharp transients — the places where MP3 tends to smear first.
In numbers: Spotify to M4A gives about 8 MB for a four-minute track, against 9.6 MB for MP3 320 at comparable quality. Not a dramatic saving on one song, but noticeable across a phone full of them.
Tags and cover art work exactly as they should, so files land in the Music app with title, artist, album and artwork already in place, without a round of renaming. The one thing to keep in mind is compatibility outside the Apple world: most modern players handle M4A, but older car head units and cheap hardware players sometimes do not. If the file is going onto unfamiliar hardware, MP3 remains the safer bet.

Private playlists have to be made public in Spotify first, otherwise the link opens for nobody but you. Converted files are kept for 24 hours and then deleted.
How M4A behaves outside Apple devices
Android has played M4A natively for years, and so have Windows, macOS and every current browser. In practice the format is close to universal on anything made in the last decade — the reputation for being Apple-only is a decade out of date.
Where it still fails is older hardware: car head units from the early 2010s, cheap MP3 players, some gym equipment and in-flight systems. Those read MP3 and nothing else.
So the rule is simple. If the file is going onto a phone, a computer or a modern car, M4A gives you slightly better audio for slightly less space. If it is going onto a USB stick bound for unfamiliar hardware, take MP3 320 and stop worrying about it.
